Antarctica voyage – Option 1

Thursday 29 November 2018

Information about the ships :

Thank you for your patience, I looked into the available ship and cabin options, since this year quite a few are sold out already. I assume you are looking for a ship with larger more well-appointed cabin accommodations, in early December 2018.  After searching through all of the available options I have selected two trips below that think these will be a good fit for your group.  I have listed the current rates and available cabins (based on availability of four people traveling) below but keep in mind that these could change at any time.  Some of the  rates would be revised soon by the ships.  Here are the details (these options are in no particular order and any of them would be a great choice):

Option 1 onboard the Island Sky (112 passengers) – This is a great choice if superior accommodations and an excellent expedition program are your top priority.  I have suggested the Window Suite but the less expensive Porthole Suite is the same size and configuration but does not have full sized windows.  However since the Porthole Suite is on the lower deck some may prefer this since it is much more stable in rough seas. The Island Sky offers the best of both worlds and does an excellent job of bringing together an all-suite, moderately luxurious ship with an active and robust expedition program that includes opportunities for guests to participate in citizen science. They offer a very good education program and the excursions are led by experienced and knowledgeable staff who are among the best in the industry and the service onboard is excellent. Accommodations are similar to a modern upscale hotel. Recent upgrades include the addition of tinted sliding glass doors to all cabins on the Promenade Deck, bringing Antarctica into your suite and giving easy access to the outer deck. Camping and kayaking are offered (at an additional charge and based on availability.)

Reach Buenos Aires from India. On arrival pick up and transfer to hotel for overnight stay on bed and breakfast basis.

Day 02

Friday 30 November 2018

Ushuaia, Argentina

Arrive in Ushuaia anytime today, or take advantage of a complimentary flexible arrival program and arrive up to 24 hours in advance. You’ll be staying at the beautiful Arakur Hotel and Resort, a member of the Leading Hotels of the World. Explore the trails, take a spa, relax and soak in the surroundings, or head into Ushuaia and browse the Argentinean leather markets. An optional evening briefing is a great opportunity for you to ask questions and to meet some of your fellow travelers. Enjoy a complimentary buffet breakfast in the morning.

Day 03

Saturday 01 December 2018

Embarkation

This morning, you’re free to explore Ushuaia or unwind at the resort until your mid-afternoon transfer to the ship. Once on board, you’ll be greeted by your expedition team and the ships’ officers. A concise safety and orientation briefing will be followed by the captain’s welcome dinner. After dinner, relax and take in the scenery on your early evening sail through the Beagle Channel, past Magellanic penguins, rock cormorants, and sea lion colonies.

Day 04

Sunday 02 December 2018

Day 4 & 5 – Sunday & Monday – 02 & 03 December 2018

Drake Passage

As you make your way ever closer to the white continent, numerous polar experts will prepare you with presentations on everything Antarctic, from wildlife to history. Eventually, you’ll cross the Antarctic Convergence where you’ll notice a distinct drop in temperature as you enter the waters of the Antarctic Ocean.

Those interested in Citizen Science can take part in sea bird sighting surveys, or help collect salinity samples and weather data along the way. You’re likely to witness some spectacular sights, from icebergs to an array of seabirds and whale species. If you’re lucky, you may see some of them fully breach from the sea.

Day 06

Tuesday 04 December 2018

South Shetland Islands

In the waterways of the Antarctic Peninsula, your expedition team hopes to make as much time as possible to explore by inflatable Zodiac boats and marvel up close at nature’s glory. Your expedition leader and captain will create a flexible itinerary based on weather, ice, and opportunity. You will aim for the most scenic bays and channels of the Peninsula with stops at penguin rookeries, seal wallows, bird colonies and whale feeding areas, as well as sites of historic and scientific interest.

Your first sight of land will likely be that of the South Shetland Islands. These highly volcanic islands offer amazing abundance and beauty. You may visit Half Moon Island nestled inside Livingston’s eastern shore, or conditions permitting visit historic Deception Island. Being further north, sub-Antarctic species are more commonly found here, including Chinstrap penguins and Southern Elephant seals.

Day 07

Wednesday 05 December 2018

Day 7 to  9 – Wednesday to Friday – 05 to 07 December 2018

Antarctica

As you head south across the Bransfield Strait, you will enter the Trinity Coast and Gerlache Strait. Here you may explore picturesque Neko Harbor, sheltered Paradise Harbor, the humpback whale-favored Wilhelmina Bay, the striking Lemaire Channel, the wildlife-filled Penola Channel, or the majestic Neumayer Channel. You may stop at an active scientific base such as Poland’s Arctowksi or Ukraine’s Vernadskiy as well as a historic base such as U.K.’s Port Lockroy or Wordie House.

Adelie, Chinstrap and Gentoo Penguins abound, and Weddell and Crabeater seals are often found hauled out to rest along with predatory Leopard seals and the assertive Antarctic Fur Seal. Minke and humpback whales are frequent visitors in the late season and Orca sightings are also common.

Day 10

Saturday 08 December 2018

Day 10 & 11 – Saturday & Sunday – 08 & 09 December 2018

Drake Passage

As you leave this magical place and make your way north, heading again across the Antarctic Convergence and the Drake Passage, you will continue to enjoy onboard presentation series and wildlife spotting. Sailing back to Ushuaia through the Beagle Channel, you will celebrate the conclusion of your expedition with a special slideshow.
